Second Medical Opinion Services

When you or your family members are facing significant medical decisions, obtaining a second opinion from a specialist can be invaluable. Microsoft provides employees and their families with complimentary access to a Second Medical Opinion service to ensure peace of mind. Premera and Kaiser members can utilize Teladoc Health Expert Medical Opinion, while Surest members have access to 2nd MD.

Premera & Kaiser enrollees

Teladoc Health Expert Medical Opinion is available to Microsoft benefits-eligible employees as well as their spouses, domestic partners, and children (regardless of age or eligibility), and extended family members may participate in this voluntary and confidential program. For this program, extended family members include siblings, parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, or cousins.

Surest enrollees

2nd MD is available for Microsoft employees enrolled in the Surest Plan and their enrolled dependents.

The program is ideally suited for patients with complex conditions such as cancer, those who are candidates for surgery, or those who have been unable to have their medical questions fully addressed by local specialists. Both Teladoc Health and 2nd.MD offer the following services at no cost to you:

  • Expert medical opinion: Get a second opinion from an expert regarding a recent, complex diagnosis or treatment plan.

  • Coaching: Receive additional help navigating the medical system or asking questions to a specialist physician about health conditions and treatment options.

Important note: This program does not cover the cost of treatments. Prior to receiving any additional treatment or service, review the coverage details of your medical plan or contact your health plan provider.

When you contact your Expert Medical Opinion service provider (2nd.MD for Surest members or Teladoc Health for all others), a representative will verify your eligibility, collect all necessary authorizations and consents, and open a case for review. 

Quick tip! Second Opinion Services are not intended for urgent medical situations where immediate intervention is required. 

If your case needs an expert medical opinion, they will assemble your medical records from your providers including, but not limited to: 

  • Physician notes
  • Consult reports
  • Imaging, labs, and testing
  • Pathology tissue and reports 

A physician case manager will review your records for gaps in care and significant medical issues to be explored while working with you and the medical expert(s) assigned to your case. The expert(s) will make their assessment and create your final report within a few weeks (depending on the complexities of your case). At this point, your physician case manager will set up a time with you to discuss the results. 

Important note: The expert(s) and the physician case manager will not serve as treating physicians, but only as a resource for you and your treating physician(s). 

Teladoc Health and 2nd.MD will never share your medical records, medical information, or the contents of your report with anyone, including Microsoft or your health plan, unless you specifically authorize such disclosure. Both programs comply with all relevant state, national, and international laws and regulations, including HIPAA.
