Microsoft Service Anniversary program

​​A little recognition goes a long way. And thanks to the Extraordinary! Platform, getting and sharing that recognition is easier than ever.  

We celebrate milestone Service Anniversaries every five years with both:

  • A recognition experience (message from CEO and manager)

  • Service Anniversary award choice (based on milestone eligibility)

On the date of your Service Award

 

Employees will receive an email with a link to the Service Anniversary experience on the Extraordinary! platform, that may include:

  • A message from the CEO

  • A message from their manager

  • Any Extraordinary! recognition history

  • Optional downloads of Teams backgrounds and Outlook signatures

  • The ability to manage the visibility of their award

     

Extraordinary! Service Anniversary experience

 

Before the anniversary

 

  • Managers receive notifications 30 days in advance and again 7 days in advance as a reminder if the manager hasn’t taken action yet.

  • Notifications invite the manager to contribute congratulatory messages.

     

On the anniversary date

 

  • Employees will receive an email with a link to their award page on the Extraordinary! platform.

  • The award page will feature all submitted messages and recognition received.

Awards structure

 

  • Rewards are calculated at $30 USD per year of service or local currency equivalent.

     

Award options by milestone

 

  • Year 5: Cash reward or charitable donation (US only)

  • Years 10+: Cash reward, charitable donation (US only), or crystal

Charitable donation amount (US only)

 

  • $30 USD per year of service + Microsoft match = $60 USD per year of service

     

Crystal Awards

 

  • Crystal awards are available beginning at the 10-year milestone and every 5 years thereafter.

  • Delivery may take up to three months after selection due to personalization and shipping.

  • Crystals are delivered via Microsoft Mailing Services by default to your Microsoft office address, or a preferred address for those with a home office/remote delineation.

     

Key award rules

 

  • Employees have 12 months from their service date to select an award.

  • Awards you’ve already selected can’t be replaced or exchanged for another option (including crystals, cash, or US-only charitable contributions).

  • Unselected awards expire after one year and cannot be recovered.

  • Service award crystals that are not delivered and received by an employee’s termination date will be deemed unrecoverable.

     

Visibility and privacy

 

  • Service Anniversary awards are private by default.  They do not appear on the Awards Feed and are not searchable in the Extraordinary! platform. 

     

How to celebrate a Service Anniversary on the Extraordinary! platform

 

  • Managers: receive an email notification with the relevant award link. Click the link to enter a personalized note in the Manager’s Anniversary Message field to recognize the employee’s contributions and impact. 

     

Additional program information

 

Recognition wall

 

At the 25-year milestone of service with Microsoft, employees will have their names engraved on a commemorative wall in Building 33 on Redmond's campus. Once eligible, employees will receive more details from the system email 

 

Morale celebration 

 

Managers can plan a morale celebration for milestones starting at the 20-year anniversary and every 5 years after with instructions via email from the system email 

Employee service awards are given based on an employee's service award date found in aka.ms/EC/, which may differ from their hire date. Service dates are determined by the amount of time the employee has been classified as regular Microsoft headcount. 

  • Break in service: Service dates are adjusted when there is a break in service. If there is a break in service and the employee is rehired, then prior service is bridged, and the service date is adjusted to reflect the prior service.

  • Mergers and acquisitions: If an employee comes to Microsoft as part of a merger or acquisition, their service award eligibility is calculated from their actual Microsoft hire date. Service with the former company is recognized only for purposes of vacation accrual and eligibility for level of severance benefits. Service within a limited integrated company (e.g., LinkedIn, GitHub, ABK etc.) is not recognized for service awards. ​

Puget Sound employees are able to drop off unwanted Service Anniversary Crystal towers (5, 10, 15, 20 year awards) in good condition. Interoffice mail is prohibited at this time. This is a pilot program that will allow us to gauge employee interest to potentially expand the program. Learn more here.

 

Previously selected awards cannot be replaced or traded for an alternate option, including crystal sculptures, cash, or charitable contributions (US only). 

 

  • Current and past employees may purchase a crystal sculpture from a previous milestone from Bamko. Your Microsoft service tenure will be confirmed with AskHR. You may also use this website to self-purchase replacement crystal sculptures that have been broken or chipped.​
