I Just Got Divorced

After you finalize your divorce, legal separation, or annulment, you’ll want to take care of some important tasks related to your benefits at Microsoft. Follow these steps to update your personal information and benefits coverage.

If you've changed your name, address, or marital status after ending your marriage/partnership, you'll need to update this information in Microsoft systems. Here's how:

  • Update your personal information: Go to Employee Central to update your name, address, and marital status in our system.

  • Social Security Administration: Be sure to change your name with the Social Security Administration by completing the application for a new Social Security Card, Form SS-5.

Microsoft will notify your health care plan and Fidelity of your name and address change. You will receive an updated ID card from the health care company reflecting your new name approximately two weeks after they have received this notification.

Legal separation, annulment, and divorce are considered qualifying status changes, allowing you to make changes to your benefit elections outside the annual Open Enrollment period. Remember, you have 60 days to make any benefit changes. Here are the changes you can make:

  • Add or delete medical coverage for yourself, your ex-spouse, and any dependent children.

  • Remove dependent life insurance coverage.

  • Enroll, change, begin, or end participation in the Health Care and Dependent Care Flexible Spending Accounts (FSA).

  • Request a Health Savings Account (HSA) card for your new spouse (if you have an HSA). To do so, go to Manage my Account and select My Payment Card.

To make these benefits changes, or to update your former dependent’s name or residential address, visit Enroll/Change Benefits and follow the steps outlined when submitting the divorce event. Ensuring the correct address is on file is crucial when processing COBRA paperwork timely. To ask questions or learn about COBRA coverage, contact the Microsoft COBRA Service Center at (833) 253-4929.

If you have a Health Savings Account (HSA) card and would like to remove your former spouse’s access, contact Premera Customer Service at (800) 676-1411 or send an email message to Premera

Following your legal separation, annulment, or divorce, you may want to change your beneficiary designations on your investment, insurance, and health savings accounts. Changes take effect immediately. Consider the following:

  • To update the beneficiary information for your Employee Life and Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) insurance, go to the Benefits Enrollment tool.

  • To designate or change a beneficiary for your Health Savings Account (HSA), go to Manage my Account.

You may want to adjust your Federal and State tax withholdings after you are legally separated, have had your marriage annulled, or are divorced. To update your tax withholding, go to W-4.

If you need any assistance or have questions, please reach out to your HR representative or visit the Microsoft Benefits portal for more information.
