Pet Insurance

Our pets are like family and when they get sick or injured, veterinary costs can add up quickly. Microsoft employees can purchase MetLife Pet Insurance at a discounted rate (1), making it easier than ever to get your pets the help they need. MetLife Pet Insurance covers accidents, illnesses, and even routine vet visits for dogs, cats, and some exotic animals (depending on your state). Not only that, but the premium is reimbursable through Perks+ .

All U.S. Microsoft employees (including retail, interns, and visiting researchers) and their spouse or domestic partner can voluntarily enroll in MetLife Pet Insurance at any point in the year. Once you enroll, there is a waiting period before coverage kicks in. Accident coverage and optional Preventative Care coverage (if elected) begin at midnight Eastern Time on the effective date of your policy. Illness coverage begins 14 days later.

With the MetLife Pet mobile app, it's easy to submit and track claims, manage your pet's health, and find nearby pet services. You'll also have 24/7 access to TeleHealth Concierge Services (2) to find help even when the vet isn't open.

Here's some more of what MetLife Pet has to offer:

  • Flexible coverage with the freedom to visit any U.S.-licensed vet, emergency clinic, or specialist

  • Optional preventive care coverage for routine wellness (3)

  • Family plans option (4) – one policy with a shared annual deductible and annual limit for up to three dogs and cats

  • Coverage of previously covered pre-existing conditions when switching providers

  • Storage of your pet's health records in one convenient place

  • Access to Pet Knowledge Base and informative monthly newsletters

What are Pre-Existing Conditions?

Pre-existing conditions are defined in the MetLife Policy as conditions where prior to the accident or illness effective date of the policy a pet received treatment, care or a diagnosis, veterinarian provided medical advice, or the pet displayed signs or symptoms consistent with this condition even if a diagnosis was not made yet. These conditions are excluded from coverage.

Can Pre-Existing Conditions be waived?

If the policy contains a Pre-Existing Condition Waiver Endorsement, this exclusion will be waived for conditions that were previously covered by another insurer. At enrollment, inform MetLife that you currently have an insurance policy for your pet with another provider. The coverage between the MetLife policy and the other pet insurance policy must be continuous, with no lapses where the pet was not covered by either plan. The prior plan must be a pet insurance policy, not a discount program from a veterinarian.

How do I qualify for the Pre-Existing Condition Waiver?

When filing your first claim with MetLife, provide proof that the claim was covered by the prior insurance company along with all other required claim documents (invoice, doctor's SOAP notes for the vet visit claimed).

Proof of prior coverage can be one of the following:

  • Explanation of Benefits (EOB) from the prior insurer showing reimbursement for the condition

  • Declarations Page from the prior insurer that shows Excluded Conditions from the prior policy

If these documents cannot be provided, a Declarations Page from the prior insurer showing dates the policy was in effect and supporting doctor's SOAP notes that indicate the condition was not pre-existing to those effective dates can replace them.

For an online quote or to enroll, go to the Microsoft-specific link (dependents can obtain this from the employee directly). You can customize your deductible, annual limit, and reimbursement rate, so they work best for your pet's needs and your budget. If you currently have pet insurance through another provider, be sure to inform MetLife when you enroll.

Important Note! Premiums may periodically change at renewal due to economic and other factors. MetLife Pet will notify you in advance of the renewal if your premiums will be changing. Pet rates may vary based on pet age, breed, location, and the chosen deductible, reimbursement rate, and annual limit.

You can file a claim by using the MetLife Pet mobile app, online portal, email, fax, or by mail. Once MetLife has received all required documentation for a claim, most claims are processed within five days. If the claim expense is covered under the policy, reimbursement can be done by check or direct deposit.
