Leave of Absence

Whether you need time to rest and recharge, bond with a new child, tend to your health needs or those of your family, serve our nation, or volunteer-Microsoft supports you. Our time off and leave of absence programs provide you with flexibility to take the time off you need when you need it.

Microsoft U.S. benefits-eligible full- and part-time employees are eligible to apply for a paid leave of absence. For the purposes of eligibility, a part-time employee is defined as one who is regularly scheduled to work at least 20 hours per week.

Interns and visiting researchers are generally not eligible for paid leave under these policies. However, they may be eligible for unpaid time off for family or medical reasons under applicable law.

In addition to generous vacation and sick time off, Microsoft provides a number of paid leaves to support you during those moments that matter. Here are some examples:

Welcoming a child into your family

New parents can take up to 12 weeks off, and birth mothers/persons are eligible to take an additional eight weeks of maternity disability leave, for a total of 20 weeks off.

See the New & Expectant Parent Support page for additional resources.

Caring for a family member with a serious health condition

Eligible employees can take up to 12 weeks of family caregiver leave, with the first 4 weeks paid at 100% of salary and the remaining 8 weeks unpaid.

See the Complex Care Navigation (Family First) page for additional resources.

A medical need requiring extended time off

Short-term disability (STD) provides up to 26 weeks of leave, paid at 100% of salary for the first 8 weeks and 75% of salary for the remaining weeks. Long-term disability benefits are available once STD is exhausted.

See the I'm coping with a serious health condition page for additional resources.

Military training or active duty

For eligible employees serving in the U.S. military, Microsoft provides up to 30 days of full pay (without offset) per calendar year for military duty. Additionally, you can receive up to 18 months where Microsoft pays the difference between your military pay and regular base pay, ensuring financial stability during your service.
