Fertility and Family Building

Microsoft supports you and your loved ones in your journey to parenthood or fertility preservation. Our partnership with Progyny ensures you have access to the best resources and support available.

This benefit is available to all U.S. benefits-eligible part-time and full-time employees and their eligible spouse/domestic partners who are enrolled in a Premera, Surest, or Kaiser Foundation Health Plan of Washington health plan. For additional details, review the full definition of an eligible employee, eligible dependents, and the explanation of those who are not eligible for coverage.

Fertility coverage differs on the Kaiser Permanente CA Plans. See the Kaiser CA Plan page for details.

Important Note: The lifetime benefit of Smart Cycles is per family, not per member. See the Eligibility section of the Progyny Member Guide for more information.

Your Progyny benefits include comprehensive coverage for the services you need, access to care from top providers, concierge support from your own care advocate or coach, and expert resources to empower you on your path to parenthood. The program is designed to remove barriers to care, allowing your doctor to pursue the most effective treatment for you the first time. Features of the benefit include:

  • Smart Cycles that cover your treatment from start to finish, including integrated fertility medication coverage

  • A comprehensive network of over 950 fertility specialists throughout the country

  • Customized fertility treatment with a fast track to in vitro fertilization (IVF)

  • Fertility preservation via egg/sperm freezing

  • Surrogacy and adoption counseling

Patient Care Advocate (PCA) Service

You’ll have a designated Patient Care Advocate (PCA) who specializes in fertility support and is dedicated to helping you build your family. Your PCA can help you with counseling, advice, and logistical support, including physician selection and education, coordination of appointments, review of treatment options, and family building options for same-sex couples.

To make your fertility benefit easier to use, Progyny bundles all the individual services, tests, technology, and treatments into what’s called a Smart Cycle. The Progyny Smart Cycle is a benefit currency that is expressed in fractions. Each treatment or service type, such as IVF or IUI, is valued as a fraction of a Smart Cycle. You can mix and match Smart Cycle treatments until you max out your Smart Cycle balance.

The Progyny benefit includes a lifetime limit of 2 Smart Cycles per family (with one additional Smart Cycle if the first two do not result in a live birth).

Important Note: You must first activate your Progyny benefit to access the fertility coverage. Any applicable deductibles, coinsurance, and copays will still apply, based on your health plan.

A Smart Cycle can include a variety of treatments and procedures, such as:

  • Consultation and diagnostic testing

  • IVF treatment options (conventional or frozen)

  • Assisted hatching/embryo biopsy

  • Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI)

  • Preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy (PGT-A)

  • Egg freezing using cryopreservation through vitrification

  • Intrauterine intercourse (IUI)

  • Timed intercourse (TIC)

  • Frozen embryo transfer (FET)

  • Sperm freezing

  • In-cycle monitoring/management

  • Sperm wash and preparation

  • Anesthesia

  • Fertilization

  • Embryo culture

  • Tissue storage

  • Preimplantation genetic testing for monogenic/single gene disease (PGT-M)

Here’s a quick checklist to help you get started in using your Progyny benefits:

  • Review the Progyny Member Guide for important information about your coverage.
  • Activate your benefit: Before receiving services or beginning treatment, contact Progyny to verify your eligibility and complete onboarding to activate your benefit.
  • Review your financial responsibility: All covered services are still subject to member financial responsibility as determined by your medical insurance plan. This means you should expect bills for all covered services authorized by Progyny.
  • Select a Progyny in-network clinic: Any Progyny covered treatments and services must be performed by a Progyny in-network provider or at a Progyny in-network clinic to utilize your benefit. You can search for an in-network clinic at progyny.com/find a-provider or contact your PCA. When contacting a clinic to schedule an appointment let them know you have Progyny and provide your Progyny ID (provided at onboarding).

Quick tip! Be sure to request an authorization prior to receiving services. Your PCA can assist you with this process once you activate your benefit.
